When I catch up with the band's singer, Erika Lewis, in her hometown, she still seems a little bemused and delighted that something that began so casually has struck such a chord.

As a band, Tuba Skinny go back to the source. That's the city of New Orleans itself, the beginning point of so much music that made its way from the port, up the Mississippi and into the heart of America.

And to the great blues and jazz tunes of the '20s that provide their repertoire. We started out playing on the street, it's only more recently we started playing festivals and clubs. They find songs on old 78s and others discovered on the internet. For Lewis, it began with her father's extensive record collection, much of it ragtime jazz and blues music from before World War II. Music has been an essential part of the recovery of the city post-Katrina: 40thper cent of the population forced to move by the hurricane did not return.

But the warmth of the city's musical heritage remains, as can be seen on YouTube clips of Tuba Skinny street performances. It's a New Orleans kind of story: no heavy-duty management or big record company push. Immediately we started getting nice feedback and things took off.

One of the attractions is that Tuba Skinny is like a band from years ago, they can play anywhere, PA system not required. It's not about any one person and I enjoy being one more instrument among all the others. The end result for Melbourne band The Eagle and the Worm is not so far removed from Tuba Skinny: an eight-piece band that is all about the joy of live performance, although their music had a very different beginning. This group of hilarious people are sure to bring some joy into your day.

With a laugh a minute, if you need some cheering up, or just a good chuckle, this is the place to be.
