Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. Swelling and itching reactions after treatment with ivermectin paste have occurred in horses carrying heavy infections of neck threadworm Onchocerca sp. Not for use in humans. These are actually flies, not worms, and often give owners cause for concern over the summer. They eventually arrive in the stomach where they remain for the next 10 months.
Bots can cause damage to the stomach lining. Administration of an ivermectin or moxidectin wormer such as Eqvalan, Equimax or Equset in the winter is also effective. Where there is extensive grazing and limited horse numbers under the control of a single owner, pasture management can be very effective at reducing levels of parasitism. Unfortunately most of our clients have limited access to grazing, or share livery yards with a changing population of horses and owners.
Although the following precautions will help to control parasite burdens on pasture we must emphasise that they are NOT a substitute for an effective worming strategy. To discuss a worming programme in more detail please ring to speak to one of our Equine vets. The Equine Vets at Mount Vets are here to help with any questions you have on this subject — if you need help or advice on any equine veterinary issues please give us a call immediately - we're here to help.
Unbiased horse worming advice from Mount vets There seem to be so many different horse wormers on the market that it can be difficult to decide which horse worming product to use. Give you tips on how to keep pasture as clean as possible to reduce the parasite challenge to your horse Advise you on the correct rotation of wormers to reduce the chances of resistant strains of parasite developing.
Give you some general rules to help you develop your own worming routine. Tapeworms Anoplocephala species Tapeworms attach at the junction of the small and large intestine.
Bots Gasterophilus These are actually flies, not worms, and often give owners cause for concern over the summer. Keeping Pasture Clean Where there is extensive grazing and limited horse numbers under the control of a single owner, pasture management can be very effective at reducing levels of parasitism. Try to remove horse droppings from pasture regularly — twice weekly if possible. Divide paddocks into smaller areas to allow rotational grazing and make it easier to pick up droppings.
Try not to over-graze paddocks — ideally no more than 1 — 2 horses per acre. THing is I had worked out a routine this year with ivermectin as ingredient starting with Equimax in September to control tapeworm then giving Eraquell, its sister product in the winter but now someone said I would not need to worm again until the spring - sounds a bit long but is this true?
Tried to search for product description but have not been lucky in this respect. Eraquell - the twin product which kills worm apart from tapeworm is every 8 - 10 weeks.
I believe Equimax has all that Eraquell has plus tapework control. I used Equimax on my two start of September for tapeworm as Chancer had a low worm count in June. Their worm count when we changed over to winter fields mid November was clear - but I do poo pick regularly. She may be confusing you with tape worm control - some people worm for this at the start and end of the grazing season, hence not needing to use it again until the spring.
I know - and I am still on a learning curve re worming this used to always be organised by someone else in the past I did do the Panacur 5 day course though as well because I read that this and Equest are the only ones for the encysted type - seems like I have got things more or less right.
